There are many and varied outdoor adventure activities in the area – something for everyone. In particular,m there are some excellent cave systesm to explore not far from Soppong / Pang Mapha;

Lot Cave

Tham Lot (Lot Cave) features the largest cave opening in SE Asia, with a river passing through the cave that can be explored with local guides on bamboo rafts. Approx 77 kms from Mae Hong Son, Thum Lot is a large cave system. Once the dwelling place of pre-historic man, archaeologists have discovered ancient clay pottery and a number of carved wooden coffins inside the “rooms” of the cave.

Between kilometre markers Km.138 and Km.139 on Route 1095, a small road leads 9kms to the cave. A stream runs from the cave mouth through to the other side of the mountain. Visitors can travel by raft or on foot to explore the 1-kilometre-long cave, which is offers stunning views of stalactites and stalagmites. Guide services are provided by local villagers at a modest price per group. Nearby accommodation is available, including a camping site near the Tham Lot Nature Study Centre adjacent to the cave entrance.

Mae Lana Cave

Mae Lana Cave is approximately 4kms from the  Tai Yai village of Baan Mae Lana. It also has a 12km stream flowing through it. Suitable for adventurous and reasonable fit tourists, its a long walk through but the wonderful waterfall, magnificent stalactites and stalagmites make it well worth the effort.  Location is 73 km from Mae Hong Son on Highway No.1095. Requires a left turn onto Route 1226, with approx 6 km to  Baan Mae Lana. Local guides and home-stay are available.
